Family Role Play

My mom has been here this past week and we have had a great time. We spent a lot of the time just sitting in the same room occasionally commenting on this or that. It's just nice to have that companionable silence. It reminded me of growing up. My dad passed away when I was 11 and my siblings were all grown so it was just the two of us.

My sister and brother in law were in town also. They had tickets to Riverdance on Saturday night. Isn't funny how even as adults your family order is significant. On Saturday, my sister (who is a fabulous cook by the way), was making comments about what we should have at mealtime. I immediately got my "panties in a wad". This is my home and my kitchen how dare you tell me what to do! Of course, little sister that I am, instead of speaking up I pouted and acted poorly for the rest of the day. I was awfully territorial about my kitchen and what should be made in it. Sorry sis. Once I became rational again I knew you were not trying to intrude but be helpful. I guess there is a lot of truth to the old saying about too many cooks in the kitchen.

I think my family forgets sometimes, just how much Devin helps around the house. I try to do the lions share of the cooking and housework, but he helps too. He doesn't hesitate to make a meal (usually on the weekends) or vacuum or start a load of laundry. I'm determined to raise a son that does these things for his wife one day. I don't wait on my family all the time. I purposely back off at times so that they know that we are all in this together. Families are so busy anymore that everyone should do their fair share. I could do it all but, well you know the saying, if mama aint happy no one is.
