Summer Reading

Every summer I try to read a classic that I haven't read before. This time around I read The Catcher in the Rye. I finished it and thought, what's the big deal. Thankfully, Kristen had to read this for a class she took at KU called Expressions of Youth Rebellion. I had to have her explain to me why this book was such a big deal. I found it interesting but anti-climatic. Thankfully she reminded me to put it in the perspective of when it was written and how scandalous Holden's behavior was. I found it interesting that he would be so depressed and yet no one stepped in to help him. It certainly reinforced the fact that at the time this book was written any psychiatric issues were not talked about. It was considered shameful. I'm glad I took the time to read it. Now when I hear references to the book I have a better perspective.

Now I'm off to reading a few books we've downloaded to the Kindle. I started to buy them in the bookstore and realized that would be silly when I could just put them on the Kindle. I'll save the gift cards we've received (Thank you again!) for books that Kristen and I can't or don't want to download. (Kristen likes to underline interesting text in her books.)
